Meta acquires PlayAI, a US-based voice AI startup led by Egyptian founder

Meta has acquired PlayAI, a California-based voice AI company founded and led by Egyptian engineer Mahmoud Felfel. The financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

Mahmoud, who completed his Bachelor of Engineering from Egypt’s Mansoura University in 2012, co-founded PlayAI with Hammad Syed in 2020. The duo previously worked together as software engineers at the Dubai-based classifieds platform Dubizzle before starting the voice AI startup in the United States.

PlayAI has developed what it calls “the voice of intelligence,” with its flagship product Play Dialog representing a breakthrough in conversational AI. This multi-turn speech model, trained on hundreds of millions of conversations, excels in understanding context and responding with nuanced emotion. Independent testing by a firm showed 7 out of 10 participants preferred Play Dialog over other state-of-the-art voice models, notes a blog post by the company.

The startup has also released Play 3.0 mini, a fast, lightweight, multilingual real-time text-to-speech model, along with a no-code voice agent platform and realtime APIs. The company recently launched Playnote, described as “NotebookLM but with any voice, custom prompts and API access,” and has served nearly 40,000 customers through its platforms.

PlayAI raised $21 million in seed funding led by Kindred Ventures and 500 Global just months ago, with backing from Y Combinator, Race Capital, Soma Capital, Pioneer Fund and other investors.

Meta’s internal communications described PlayAI’s voice creation platform as aligned with the company’s roadmap across AI characters, Meta AI, wearables, and audio content creation. The entire PlayAI team will join Meta next week and report directly to the company’s AI leadership.

The acquisition is part of Meta’s broader strategy to compete with OpenAI and Google in the generative AI race, with recent moves including aggressive talent recruitment and partnerships with AI companies.
